The time I won a culture bee

After reluctantly starting Spanish 1 in highschool, I quickly fell in love with the language and the culture. I'm forever grateful to my homeschool Spanish teacher who challenged me and taught me to enjoy Spanish.

My homeschool class competed in a regional language competition with public and private schools and other homeschool groups in the area. Being an over-achiever (and obsessed with Spanish), I volunteered myself to represent my class in the Spanish culture bee in this competition.

I spent the next weeks and months learning...

  • When did the Spanish civil war begin and end?

  • Who led the conquest of Peru?

  • In what year did Mexico win its independence from Spain?

These are the types of little facts I studied and committed to memory. It served me well because lo and behold, out of a couple dozen students in the culture bee, I won! 🥇

It's a fun memory I have and reminds me of the beginnings of my love for Spanish and the Spanish-speaking cultures.

What I haven't told you yet is that my class also won a prize for our dance to La Bamba. 💃🏽 But that's a story for another time...

(I've carried on my teacher's legacy and am proud to teach my own classes. I hope to inspire a love of Spanish in my own students or, at the very least, help them get through high school language requirements with ease and fun!)
